  • The passage of the inheritance law under customary marriage, December 2003
  • The passage of the Amended section 14.7 of the New Penal Law of Liberia, which gives a broader definition to rape and a stricter punishment in 2006.
  • Establishment of criminal court E for sexual offenses and the setting up of SGBV crimes unit of the Ministry of Justice.

Challenges

  • Compromising of cases by family members and communities especially rape and related domestic violence cases
  • Decentralization of AFELL Legal Aid Clinic (in other counties)
  • The lack of safe homes for survivors of domestic violence.
  • Intense patriarchal systems
