
Major Achievements
AFELL’s advocacy, with the collaboration and support of our partners, has resulted in the establishment of;
- The first Juvenile court on June 16, 1997, Montserrado County
- The passage of the inheritance law under customary marriage, December 2003
- The passage of the Amended section 14.7 of the New Penal Law of Liberia, which gives a broader definition to rape and a stricter punishment in 2006.
- Establishment of criminal court E for sexual offenses and the setting up of SGBV crimes unit of the Ministry of Justice.
Challenges
- Compromising of cases by family members and communities especially rape and related domestic violence cases
- Decentralization of AFELL Legal Aid Clinic (in other counties)
- The lack of safe homes for survivors of domestic violence.
- Intense patriarchal systems
